A Prophets Lament over the Condition of the New Jerusalem

As we approach what is called “Holy Week” my heart weeps for the condition of His people the “New Jerusalem” of God.

Just like 2000 years ago much of His Church languishes in religious perfunctory and humanistic performance.  Many AWOL members will make their first visits to our buildings as if it was their yearly pilgrimage to Mecca.

They will come in search of God’s favor for the rest of the year but their hearts are really far from Him. Others driven by the current economic affairs will attend searching for hope and peace but what will they find? Will they find love?

Matt 24:12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.

The truth is we seek His blessings but not His way. Our Lord said to the old Jerusalem words that ring true even today;

Matt 23:37-39 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!  38 See! Your house is left to you desolate;  39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Oh yes, we will jump up and make a big to do in worship and praise on Palm Sunday. Maybe even do a couple of holy laps inside the building but we will not cross the street to share the goodness of God with our neighbors. Remember, it was the very worshippers who took of their robes and laid them before him at His triumphant entry that would later turn on our Lord and cry out “Crucify Him, Crucify Him”.

We all know the problem but what is the solution? It begins with leadership. We must fight off the religious pressures of this world and people’s desire to be entertained. We must make our assemblies open to the leading of His Spirit and if we showcase anything let it be the love we have for one another.

Let us put aside the dramas, skits, elaborate musical shows and pageantry that draw attention away from the simplicity of Christ. I know it is what the people expect but what if we pattern our services around the “Audience of One” as they should be instead of catering to the entertainment desires and the prideful spirits of the people.

Here is a question. What would your Easter Sunday look like if you paid no one?

Yes, your future as a leader is on the line and you may find yourself without sufficient funds to pay all those expensive buildings and staff or worse you may end up in the street. The question is who would you rather face, fickle people today or the face of your Master on that Day? The ugly truth is that for many the costs are too high and the commitment is too week.

I speak to those that have an ear to hear and a heart to pray. What will you do different this week? What Christianity will you model before your family and before a sin-racked world? Will you only pray and worship “in Church” or will you worship and adore Him 24/7?

May the Lord who is Head of his Church bless and confirm those things that please Him and may the high flying circus acts and spiritual gymnasiums be exposed by His absence.

What have I to gain for saying these things? Probably nothing more but continued rejection, scorn and nashing of teeth but if just one brother or sister rethinks their worship to the One who gave His all for them and  me then it will all be worth it.

John 12:24 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.  25 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.  26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. NKJV

Living in La La Land; The Reasons for 2000 years of Church Ineffectiveness

It is 2am in the morning and how I wish the Lord would let me sleep! Father, why don’t you do your downloads during daylight hours? The truth is I know the answer. Our minds are too busy to get a clear signal so He speaks when there is no traffic.

It is the burden of the Lord’s Church again. Oh! How He loves her! How He wishes she would listen on this Valentine Day Night. I hear the same words over and over again. To obey is better than sacrifice! To obey is better than sacrifice! Oh how He is tired of our Sunday morning performances.

What I share today comes from 16 years of being king of my own La La Land. I was sincere, I was zealous, I was diligent but I was wrong. Judged by men I was a star to be followed but judged by the Lord I was a poor plastic copy of a religious system. I share this to let the readers know I tread lightly when I share what I am about to write.

I know I will be making some generalizations and there are pockets of Light all over this world but in general the Church has been, is and will continue to be ineffective for another 2000 years if we do not repent and return to the true Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

In essence the Church is living in what I call La La Land. It’s Disney Land and Magic Kingdom Park rolled into one. America is a post Christian nation! Don’t fight it! Don’t reject it! Deal with it! We have lost at least two generations and we are rapidly losing another. We need to quit trying to change the culture! We are the ones that need to change. We need a baptism of love and a Tsunami of mercy and compassion.

We have lived in La La Land so long we are out of touch with the culture and worse we are out of touch with the myriads of hurting people who are captive to this present age. While we fight, argue and divide over doctrine the enemy is tearing into the people like sharks around schooling minnows. The wounded are everywhere and while our buildings are everywhere too the nature of Christ; his essence, his perfume is sadly missing.

Here are the reasons (the modern church world ie. La La Land) we have been and are ineffective:

  1. 1. It is not a Real World-

We have followed business concepts and created our own brand of Jesus. It is a world that has no effect on the culture. It’s sterile. It will not reproduce because it’s not real.

Jesus said in John 17;15-19

I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.  16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.  17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.  18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. NKJV

We have done a great job emphasizing the “they are not of the world” part. So great that we only send people into the world to take them out of the world and put them into our La La Land. While each congregation has developed its own theme it’s still La La Land. The rides, the colors and the people may be different but it is still make believe. We have developed our own “sanitize to my theme spray” and should you enter looking and acting different you will not leave without the First Happy Church of the True Believers makeover.

Those living in La La Land are instructed weekly to sanitize their environment. To do this they must first judge then alienate from the very people we were left in this world to help. The average La La Land member has no Christian friends so in essence he has been sterilized from having an effect on his culture.

It is not the real world people! Wake up!  Jesus needs spiritual paramedics who can minister to the mess in the mess not transport people back to La La Land to live with all the other unrepented, unforgiving, self-centered and self-righteous “aints”.

  1. 2. It Only Attracts High Maintenance – Low Output people

La La Land only attracts and keeps emotionally needy people. They want to be told what to do. They are not free thinkers. They want the La La Land Life but it’s a mirage that only works within the four walls. So at the end of every service they line up to talk to the king.

Sunday after Sunday La La Land and her system make spiritual eunuchs. They are “Spiritual Junkies” that live needy for their Sunday morning fix. They are addicted and the king is addicted to being needed! God Help us!

They return to the world on Mondays with two choices. They either run from it by creating a false spiritual vacuum (like La La Land) around themselves or they are lured away and enticed by what it offers. In either way the enemy wins and the culture goes unchanged. This system only makes La La Land clones not disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. 3. La La Land breeds Hypocrisy-

In La La Land you cannot share your heart. You must toe the line to the king’s wishes. To be a team player means to sell your soul and your possessions to La La Land. La La Land is full of rules and do’s and don’ts because spiritual eunuchs can’t hear God for themselves.

The more religious La La Land is the greater the hypocrisy.  There is no place in La La Land for honesty. A failure in the ranks is against the rules. To publicize failure means to publicize that La La Land doesn’t work and oh my God maybe isn’t real!

People and leaders (the king’s yes men) disappear in La La Land without explanation.  Nobody asks because it is not kosher to ask. Just keep smiling and keep giving even if you are dying inside.

This is why in the church today pornography, homosexuality, fornication, adultery, pill addiction, gluttony and divorce are rampant.

Luke 7:36-39 (Life in La La Land)

Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.

This woman is out of order! This is not the official La La Land worship style! Jesus receives no worship from dirty sinners like these. Only holy saints can worship! She is making us uncomfortable. Where are the ushers and the king’s security detail when you need them?

In La La Land you are taught to concentrate on others sins not you own. But Jesus was not going to let them get away that easy!

Luke 7:44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman?

Dumb question of course he sees her. He sees her sin! This is where we are missing it! Do you see her need? Do you see condition? Do you see her repentance and brokenness? Do you see her total abandonment to what others think? Do you see her extreme and sincere worship?

Luke 7:44-47 I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head.  45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.  46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.

Hypocrisy is too busy judging to repent or have mercy. Hypocrisy can’t handle such violent acts of honesty. Honesty like that will ruin the formalism in our services!

  1. 4. La La Land doesn’t  feed the Need of this Culture-

It doesn’t feed the need because it alienates the world and judges the culture. It doesn’t provide a valid overcoming lifestyle which can move in and through the culture with a compassionate heart and a merciful spirit.

This culture wants it RAW! This means they are tired of scripted lines. They want reality. They don’t want La La Land. It does not work. It is fake and a poor excuse for the life of Christ.

La la land is waiting to get taken out of here and the people need help to stay and overcome not run away. They need help telling their lesbian daughter who grew up in La Land they are going to love her through this season. They need help confronting their son who is sleeping with the deacon’s daughter. They need help when the king is not around to say no to their supervisor when he offers them a promotion for sex.

Yes, this is a dirty world and a degenerate culture but Jesus has not given up on this culture! He weeps over their pain and the results of their sin. He loves them unconditionally and has not set up a barrage of conditions and obstacles for them to have to jump through to get in to Him not La La Lands buildings.

We need repentance! We need an awakening to our miserable state. We need a visitation of honesty followed by a baptism of humility.  We can’t patch up La La Land. She will not repair! We need a full demolition and a new foundation!

Until them I sound the alarm and I pray. May God be merciful because this world will not be! I am going to bed!

What does it mean to Let Jesus back in the Church?

What you are going to read is going to sound alien like it came from outer space but deep inside your spirit will resound a hearty Amen. I take it for granted that the Lord Jesus has providentially led you to this article and that your heart has been aching for the answer to this question for years. I thank God for you and pray that His Spirit will help you hear and read those things you need to further your Christian growth and discipleship.

Isa 64:5 You are indeed angry, for we have sinned – In these ways we continue; NKJV

The reason these words will sound so alien is described above. We have sinned and we have been sinning this way for a long time. The longer our sin remains the longer we become callous and hardened to them.

History reveals man always wants to do more than he wants to obey. It’s in our Adamic nature to perform externals when what the Lord is after is our hearts.  Listen to the Lord speak to us today;

Isa 1:11-14

“To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats. 12 “When you come to appear before Me, Who has required this from your hand, To trample My courts? 13 Bring no more futile sacrifices; Incense is an abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies — I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting. 14 Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them. NKJV

All you have to do is replace whatever liturgy (religious practices) you do during your services. You say “we have no liturgy!” Anytime people know what comes next in our services we have a liturgy. It doesn’t matter how spirit-filled you claim to be or how many times you repeat that God is leading this service from the pulpit. God is not in charge if your order of service is.

What does the Lord want? you ask. Great that you ask for that is the question that should direct everything we do when we come together as the Body of Christ.

Ps 51:17  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart These, O God, You will not despise.

A contrite heart means a heart broken before Him in true repentance. It’s a position of total abandonment before the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. It’s a place of total surrender. When was the last time you shed a tear before Him because of your sinful condition. Fall before Him now or be prepared to fall before Him on Judgment Day.

The difference we are discussing here is between our external Sunday morning performances (with lots of bells and whistles) and the very habitation of the Lord in our daily lives. New Testament Christianity need not offer any more sacrifices and rituals to please God. His Son said “It is finished” and it is. All He asks is that we love Him with all our hearts instead of our toys and our selfish selves. He asks too that we love one another in such a way that others would be drawn to what we have. Sounds simple but Oh… how far we have strayed.

Let’s look at a few ways we have strayed;

Going to Church

We are the Church. The Church is not a place you go to. The bible says Christ in you, the hope of glory and the kingdom of God is within you. How much clearer can it be than that?

The Building

Today’s church is found (on Sundays) scattered in all kinds of venues, denominations, independent churches, institutions, houses and halls. Not everyone in any of these settings is necessarily a new creation—living in Christ. Don Atkin

You say “We go to the building because the Glory of God is there. That is where I feel His presence.” Really! Why don’t you “feel” Him at Wal-Mart? Where did He go? The Spirit of the Living God is not a coat you put on when you enter “the church” and then hang on a coat rack as you go out the doors until next Sunday.

Building Design

Buildings created with the performance in mind and designed so the spectators can get maximum effect. The System has done a good job to make sure that it doesn’t allow or give much participation to the people. From the moment you enter you know your place and don’t even try to speak or you will find security escorting you off the premises.

Clergy-Laity Division

Officially created by the Catholic Church in the 1500’s to stem the tide of normal people reading the bible for themselves for the first time and finding out that these terms do not exist in His Church. Evangelicals have redesigned the clothing and the names but have the same divisions. In essence it’s the teaching that there are those who are qualified to interpret scripture (or perform) and the rest are not. Clergy are professional paid religious employees. It doesn’t matter if you call them pastor or priest. It’s all same thing. Jesus not I calls them hirelings. “How will it look if we do it biblically?” You ask.

1 Cor 14:26-32

26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. 30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.

What part of ALL do we not understand?

Worship

Worship is not a preset music time led by professional singers before the preaching on Sunday. Worship begins in the morning when we get up everyday. Worship is obedience to the will of God for our lives.

1 Sam 15:22 So Samuel said:” Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices  As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,

It doesn’t matter how many effects, sounds, lights, dancers, videos and musicians we use if it is not done for love. It doesn’t matter how much we spent and how professional the performance was., It was just that a performance. Christian Worship isn’t like the MTV Video awards. It is each person doing his best with what God has given them. It is all done for the “Audience of One” and he doesn’t hear the on key people more than those that sing flat with a monotone voice. He does say this ;

1 Cor 13:1 Though I speak (sing or play) with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

The Lord says it doesn’t matter how professional it is without love it is just NOISE!

Offering

The Lord has a problem with the way we do it and the purpose for which the money is used. These are things we know but we continue to do them because we must feed the System. Collecting offerings, offering plates, offering bags, offering pails and Kentucky fried chicken buckets are all ways of passing the hat. The System needs money to survive and we are more than happy to feed it as long as it produces the entertainment for which we gave it. The bible says;

1 Cor 16:2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.

God is speaking about proportionate giving according to how we prosper. There is no mention of tithing. To require the tithe is no better than multi-level marketing and Ponzi schemes that require a certain amount of skin monthly to stay in the game.

There is nothing in the above verse about giving mention and special privileges to those who give the larger amounts either. God help you if your name is on a pew, a paver, a building or inside of some hymnal. What part of there be “no collections” do we not understand? Collections are public and God is in to secret.

Matt 6:1-4 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.  2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.  3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,  4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.

Now to discuss what the money is used for.

James 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

The Bible emphasizes over and over in the New Testament the importance of taking care of the poor. Have you seen a church budget lately? Remove the hireling pay and the building expenses and there is nothing left for the widows, the orphans and the poor. The most shameful thing is we send our needy to the government for help. I am not talking about unknown visitors. I am talking about dedicated workers and givers who are experimenting a season of difficulty in their life. Ninety percent of those coming to our food pantry come from fat and happy congregations who refuse to help their own but pride themselves in how many members they have and how “anointed” their services are.

Time

How dare we tell God when to start and when to finish. If the Lord is really in charge how dare we presume to advertise the time for the end of the service? Is it just so we can usher in the second group or get to the restaurants on time? When the Lord is really in charge the clocks go out the window no matter when the football game starts. Sounds difficult? No, it sounds all too real for eighty percent of our current church membership to put up with.

If by now you are grinding your teeth in anger chill you shouldn’t get mad at the mailman. He just delivers and by the way his aim is only to please Him who is His only Source.

These are just a few of our problems as the 21st century Church of the Living God. In the end the world has pegged us perfectly. We are all about the money. The only mistake they have made is that there is a remnant that is not. This remnant is the very fear of darkness because history has shown the Lord doesn’t need many. May his tribe of radical lovers increase!

Another Missing Ingredient in the Current Apostolic Dialogue; UNITY

My heart aches for the things that are causing disunity in the Body of Christ. Last month the Lord gave me a word about one of our problems. We need heaven sent definitions of commonly used words in the current apostolic dialogue concerning His Kingdom.

This was confirmed by other brothers hearing the same thing. Most 21th century Christian leaders don’t even have biblical definitions for the words they throw around. Words like “Kingdom” become the buzzwords and everyone starts using them but only inside their present contaminated context creating “mixture” which the Lord abhors.

Recently the Lord has been speaking to me about another problem. I would like to add what I believe to be a missing ingredient in the current apostolic landscape or dialogue. I am especially burdened for the latent mistrust and disunity in those who claim to be stewarding a deposit to help build His Church and Kingdom. I am burdened even more as I recently experienced once again our inability to unite. I don’t really think we understand unity.

Where is faithful support & care for one another? Where is loyalty and respect for each other’s gifting/leanings/convictions? Why are we always trying to judge each other? Who made us the Sheriff of His Universe? Where is our patience and longsuffering for one another as we allow the Lord to mature us? Why are we so affected by our own tunnel vision that we cannot see anything but what we think is important? Do we really understand what it means to be a bond slave in His Vineyard, following only His orders by the Spirit? Nothing is ours not even our revelation. Where is the humility, transparency and the deferring to one another?

Before you take it personal or you begin to dismiss what I am saying as not a problem in your sphere let me say something. Unity is not the Marshal Law you run in your little fiefdom with those you financially or by other means control (oppress) under you. Such as those you;

  1. Offer to ordain
  2. Give a Title to
  3. Offer to give a diploma
  4. Pay a salary or provide income
  5. Promote to a position
  6. Need your “Covering” God Forbid!
  7. Need your recommendation.

myway_-_Copy

The Unity I am talking about is that found in mature peer leadership who have no agenda with you and are free to express their opinions without the fear of your backlash. The Unity we need today is that among those who know as much as you do about the Word of God or more. If the apostles who are involved in the building of His Body are going to operate like the Republican hopefuls of 2012 His church is in big trouble.

Only dead men can build without personal agendas. Safety is found in a mutually respected company of apostles and prophets.  I know it’s a process but let’s manifest at least the beginnings instead of politicking when we come together and posturing ourselves for endorsements from the weak and the younger. Most Christian “members” today are aware of our backroom squabbling and because our disunity and the heartache it has caused them  find themselves either exiting the church  or hiding out in non-spirit filled religious groups that at least offer them peace. That alone should break our hearts, bring us to repentance and then drive us to avidly seek the table for real dialogue. If we really understood & believed that only in the full representation of His Body is the full truth we would have a higher esteem for one another’s participation.

Here are some helpful suggestions;

  1. Let’s not participate in backroom discussions of one another without the third party present.
  2. Without overlooking our convictions let’s press in to participate with each other when possible
  3. Let’s ask the Lord in our prayer time for Love/Compassion/Mercy for one another
  4. Let’s take down all our flags & names which hinder unity
  5. Let’s quit deceiving ourselves about being interested in unity;
    1. Only when it’s at our address or building
    2. When we are the speakers or in charge
    3. When it was OUR idea or event
    4. When we are “correctly” represented (racially or denominationally)
    5. When we place unknowns in leadership to appease the divisive atmosphere
    6. When we get a cut of the profits. God forbid!

I am not in denial nor am I going around saying it already exists. I suspect for many of us it will take a walk we have never seen modeled making it even more difficult. It sad to say but in 25 years of ministry I have only seen glimpses of the things I long for.

Is your ego sufficiently in check? Do you have enough self-confidence and maturity to step into a dialogue where no one will be amazed or awed by your participation? Can your little world handle the fire as it is dismantled by a group of peers if need be?

It seems like we have a long way to go but the truth is everything starts with us. We don’t have to look anywhere else but the person in the mirror to begin the process. We can’t go back and fix the past or even things going on right now. We must forge ahead with a fresh example of true Christian unity.

2 Cor 4:11-12
11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death is working in us, but life in you.
NKJV

Here is a prayer:

Father, I ask that your Spirit would do an intense scan of my mind, will and emotions concerning unity in your Body. Lord, forgive me for the past and help me to take steps today for Unity. Finish your “dying process” in me that your Church may be built and your Kingdom expanded. I need your strength for this Lord! I am yours, have your way in my life. In Jesus Mighty Name! AMEN

Defining the Church; her Membership, Message and Mission

“It does not appear that these extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost were common in the Church for more than two or three centuries. We seldom hear of them after that fatal period when the Emperor Constantine called himself a Christian.  From this time they almost totally ceased.

The Christians had no more of the Spirit of Christ than the other heathens. This was the real cause why the extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost were no longer to be found in the Christian Church; because the Christians were turned heathens again, and had only a dead form left.”[1]

” The greatest hindrance to kingdom advancement is the unclear message and compromised testimony of what is generally accepted to be the church today”

Failure to rightly define the church, her membership, message, and mission, leads to all kinds of confusion.

The loose definitions and minimal requirements that are applied by so many institutions that carry the “Christian” banner have, in some respects, emasculated Christ and prostituted His bride.  What is understood to be the church today is relatively powerless and severely flawed.[2] Consequently, current belief systems push the kingdom of God somewhere out into the future, rather than equipping His disciples to step into their roles in kingdom dominion[3] today.

“Who, looking at today’s popular expression of ‘church,’ would say that it looks like the church as it is revealed in the Word of God? Anyone who would say that does not know much about God’s Revelation of the Church in His Word. But GOD STILL CLEAVES to His FULL thought about the church. He has not accommodated Himself to the situation which currently exists, and accepted it. He STILL holds to ALL that He ever thought and intended. It is His SON’S BODY, or it is an impostor. He will have a Church that really does satisfy Him and His full thought!”[4]

What the church is not:

Buildings that facilitate meetings are not churches.  They are buildings.  Nothing more.  The presence of God does not abide in buildings made with human hands.

The church is not something that we go to.  We do not “go to church.”

What the church is:

The church is the body of Christ, the called-out ones, whose head is Christ alone.

The church in any locale is the sum total of those who belong to and follow Jesus, who are born of the Spirit, a new creation.

To subdivide the church in a city or region by denominating on the basis of differing races, cultures, beliefs and/or practices is to perpetuate her powerlessness and inability to pull down the principalities, the rulers of darkness, in that locale.

To denominate with such descriptive terms as house church, simple church, organic church, etc., also plays into the hands of the devil.  His primary strategy is to keep us divided!

The body of Christ is just that—Christ’s body in the earth.  His presence abides in and among His people.

What is not church membership:

Having our names on the rolls of a religious institution or human organization—or even a group email list—does not constitute church membership.

Those who have not experienced spiritual birth by the power of the Holy Spirit, those who do not have His life within them, cannot be one with the Father and His Son, and therefore cannot be members of His body.

What is church membership:

Those who experience rebirth by the Spirit of God, and are a new creation, led by Christ in them—carriers of His life—are added to the church by the Lord,[5] and set in the body by God.[6]

What is the message of the church?

The message of the church is the gospel of Christ and His kingdom—both lived and preached to all nations, beginning where we are (our own Jerusalem).  Jesus began both to do and teach.[7]

What is the mission of the church?

The mission of the church is, first and foremost, to be incarnational—to live the Christ-life by His Spirit.

The mission of the church is, secondarily, to be missional in lifestyle, preaching both by precept and example, the gospel of the kingdom of God.

The mission of the church is to disciple authentic converts,[8] equipping them to disciple others also.

All who are numbered among a new creation are encouraged to embrace kingdom dominion possibilities now.  Embrace Jesus as our Head, and embrace fellow disciples as our brothers.  We are members of one another.  We demonstrate our new creation status by continually walking in fellowship with Christ and with one another.

We should ask Jesus to enable us to grasp and to live the “one anothers” we find in the New Covenant Scriptures.

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.[9]

Editors Note: If it is so simple, Why have we made such a mess of it?

[1] John Wesley

[2] We acknowledge that there are many earnest saints and sincere ministers within the ranks of the present-day church.  Yet, she flounders in a sea without the moorings of an authentic kingdom vision, a biblical worldview, and a grasp of a new creation.  Instead, much of the church is focusing either upon history or the future, while building bigger barns.  Our desire is to envision without yielding to a critical spirit, to help the cause of Christ rather than yield to the normalcy bias of tradition and status quo.

[3] Dominion is a Scriptural term that was first used in Genesis 1:26.  It is not the author’s intention that his use of the word be mistaken for Dominion Theology, which incorporates a Crusader mindset, and teaches that it is our Christian duty to take over the world, in a political sense, and if necessary, in a military sense, in order to impose Biblical rule.  Context will clarify that this is not our intent.

Sons and Miracle-Bullies

There’s much hubbub these days about miracles, signs, and wonders. I’m as pro-supernatural as anyone on the planet can be. I’ve experienced many exciting supernatural phenomena in my life. I just refuse to make merchandise or a reputation out of them.

Would you consider something with me? If Jesus’ life span was approximately thirty-three years, and if His ministry was approximately three years, that means He spent thirty years in sonship and three doing miracles. A ten to one ratio: thirty years of “non supernatural” sonship, and three years of “stuff.”

There are voices, personalities, and teachings saturating Christian consciousness these days that would have you believe that if we are not pumping out miracles three times a week (Wednesday night and twice on Sunday) fifty-two weeks a year, that we are somehow failing to realize the kingdom of God.

Young people are being especially affected. Young people are being enticed to “greatness” and “realizing their destiny,” and being “world changers” by performing “signs and wonders.” Kingdom greatness is defined by being the servant of all, not by being the most prolific wonder-worker. The fabric of the kingdom of God is sonship, not the working of miracles.

God has spoken to us in these last days, in, through, and by the Son . . . literally, in a sonly way (Heb. 1:1). Sonliness is the final word of God to humanity. Sonliness is the seedbed from which every other facet of kingdom expression must derive (including signs and wonders) or that expression, whatever it is, is an illegitimate expression, and perhaps even an anti-Christ one. By making a legitimate subordinate value an ultimate value, many individuals and ministries who promote the signs and wonders paradigm have lost their way in Him. Their words, spirits, values, theologies, and methods frequently betray them as manifested by what I call a “bullying spirit.”

Many of the individuals who are deeply vested in the so-called signs and wonders movement, will use intimidation of various sorts (spiritual, psychological, theological) to bully you into agreeing with them or demeaning you by making you feel inadequate, inferior, or incomplete because you do not share the same enthusiasm as they do for the alleged “pursuit of the supernatural.” This childish bullying spirit is frequently accompanied by a form of elitism that is condescendingly dismissive of others.

Dear ones, lift up your heads. Do not let the immature or the ignorant bully you and rob you of the joys of your inheritance-your sonship. Paul said the world is waiting for the manifestation of sons (sons and daughters) not wonder workers. All sons may work wonders, but not all wonder workers will be sons.

Pray that the Lord of all mercies will have mercy on us all and save us from our own blind pursuits—even those done in His Name with a Bible under our arm and a worship chorus on our lips.

The Plaster Mold: A Religious Fable

And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, The old is good enough.(Jesus of Nazareth, Luke 5:37-39 NASB)

There once was a man who, while shopping at an Arts & Crafts store, came across a plaster mold that was on sale at a deep discount. He examined the mold closely, but could not determine what shape the mold might produce. Being a curious sort, the man decided to purchase the mold intending to pour hot wax into it in order to see what the result might be after the wax had cooled.

So the man bought the mold and took it home.

Taking the mold into his workshop, the man proceeded to melt some cheap wax over a low flame. Then he poured the melted wax into the mold and waited for it to cool. When the wax had cooled and hardened, the man popped the wax out of the mold and onto his workbench.

He looked at the formed wax and gasped!

Staring up at him from the table was the face of a gargoyle! It was ugly! Hideous! Fiendish-looking! The man was repulsed by the wax image, so he destroyed it. Then he began to consider how he might change the figure produced by the mold into something beautiful.

And he had an idea.

I know whats wrong, he thought. The problem is that I used an inferior wax the first time. So he resolved to use a higher quality of material on his next try. He purchased some more expensive wax, melted it over a low flame, and poured it into the mold. As the wax cooled, the man eagerly anticipated the beautiful image that the mold would produce as a result of this effort.

The wax cooled and hardened.

The man popped the wax out of the mold. Looking up at him from the table was the face of a gargoyle! A gargoyle as ugly as the first!

In fact, the faces were identical.

Determined to produce a thing of beauty from the mold, the man decided to switch the material he would pour into the mold on his third try. So he procured some inexpensive plastic, melted it over a low flame, and poured it into the mold. The plastic cooled and hardened. The man popped the plastic out of the mold.

Another gargoyle! Identical to the first two!

The man was disappointed, but undaunted. He made several more attempts to produce something beautiful from the mold using plastics of higher quality (and greater cost) each time but the result was always the same. In the end, an ugly gargoyle face stared up at him from the table.
Finally the man conceded defeat.
The materials I have been using are not good enough, not pure enough, not valuable enough, he reasoned. If I would use silver or gold, the mold would produce a thing of beauty.
And then, because the man had neither silver nor gold, he hung his head and he wept.
The moral of the story: It doesn’t matter what move of God you put into the religious system the power, the people, the hearts, the anointing, and the gifting because as soon as the move cools and hardens, what is left will look exactly like the old religious system–the system is incapable of producing anything else.

Editors Note; This is so well said. Every generation of leaders think that they are going to do a better job than the last generation. Every Pastor thinks that “their church” can do a better job with the transfer members they got from that “other” church. Every Revival thinks they are the last move of God one before He comes! Every religious person thinks that if they just were holier they would get different results! People of GOD hear this! It doesnt matter what you pour into the SYSTEM. It’s religion and it will never produce DISCIPLES! Dont send Christianity on another 2000 years merry go round! Dont wait till you are 80 years old to realize you have wasted your time! STOP THE INSANITY NOW!
